The Hindu Rate of Wrath

By Francois Gautier:

When the Mahatma’s cowards erupt in fury, it hurts. It isn’t terror. ......

Is there such a thing as ‘Hindu terrorism’, as the arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur for the recent Malegaon blasts may tend to prove? Well, I guess I was asked to write this column because I am one of that rare breed of foreign correspondents—a lover of Hindus! A born Frenchman, Catholic-educated and non-Hindu, I do hope I’ll be given some credit for my opinions, which are not the product of my parents’ ideas, my education or my atavism, but garnered from 25 years of reporting in South Asia (for Le Journal de Geneve and Le Figaro).

In the early 1980s, when I started freelancing in south India, doing photo features on kalaripayattu, the Ayyappa festival, or the Ayyanars, I slowly realised that the genius of this country lies in its Hindu ethos, in the true spirituality behind Hinduism. The average Hindu you meet in a million villages possesses this simple, innate spirituality and accepts your diversity, whether you are Christian or Muslim, Jain or Arab, French or Chinese. It is this Hinduness that makes the Indian Christian different from, say, a French Christian, or the Indian Muslim unlike a Saudi Muslim. I also learnt that Hindus not only believed that the divine could manifest itself at different times, under different names, using different scriptures (not to mention the wonderful avatar concept, the perfect answer to 21st century religious strife) but that they had also given refuge to persecuted minorities from across the world—Syrian Christians, Parsis, Jews, Armenians, and today, Tibetans. In 3,500 years of existence, Hindus have never militarily invaded another country, never tried to impose their religion on others by force or induced conversions.

You cannot find anybody less fundamentalist than a Hindu in the world and it saddens me when I see the Indian and western press equating terrorist groups like simi, which blow up innocent civilians, with ordinary, angry Hindus who burn churches without killing anybody. We know also that most of these communal incidents often involve persons from the same groups—often Dalits and tribals—some of who have converted to Christianity and others not.

However reprehensible the destruction of Babri Masjid, no Muslim was killed in the process; compare this to the ‘vengeance’ bombings of 1993 in Bombay, which wiped out hundreds of innocents, mostly Hindus. Yet the Babri Masjid destruction is often described by journalists as the more horrible act of the two. We also remember how Sharad Pawar, when he was chief minister of Maharashtra in 1993, lied about a bomb that was supposed to have gone off in a Muslim locality of Bombay.

I have never been politically correct, but have always written what I have discovered while reporting. Let me then be straightforward about this so-called Hindu terror. Hindus, since the first Arab invasions, have been at the receiving end of terrorism, whether it was by Timur, who killed 1,00,000 Hindus in a single day in 1399, or by the Portuguese Inquisition which crucified Brahmins in Goa. Today, Hindus are still being targeted: there were one million Hindus in the Kashmir valley in 1900; only a few hundred remain, the rest having fled in terror. Blasts after blasts have killed hundreds of innocent Hindus all over India in the last four years. Hindus, the overwhelming majority community of this country, are being made fun of, are despised, are deprived of the most basic facilities for one of their most sacred pilgrimages in Amarnath while their government heavily sponsors the Haj. They see their brothers and sisters converted to Christianity through inducements and financial traps, see a harmless 84-year-old swami and a sadhvi brutally murdered. Their gods are blasphemed.

So sometimes, enough is enough. At some point, after years or even centuries of submitting like sheep to slaughter, Hindus—whom the Mahatma once gently called cowards—erupt in uncontrolled fury. And it hurts badly. It happened in Gujarat. It happened in Jammu, then in Kandhamal, Mangalore, and Malegaon. It may happen again elsewhere. What should be understood is that this is a spontaneous revolution on the ground, by ordinary Hindus, without any planning from the political leadership. Therefore, the BJP, instead of acting embarrassed, should not disown those who choose other means to let their anguished voices be heard.

There are about a billion Hindus, one in every six persons on this planet. They form one of the most successful, law-abiding and integrated communities in the world today. Can you call them terrorists?

Resonse to Sunday Spotlight “The Hindu face of Terror”

Dear Editor,

This email is in response to the sunday spotlight article, “The Hindu face of Terror”. It was really suprising to see the anti-hindu bias taken by your newspaper. Just by looking at the paper one gets a wrong notion that those people have been proven guilty ! The case is under investigation.  YOU ARE NOT THE ONES TO DECIDE WHO IS GUILTY OR NOT.

The Hindus have been a tolerant community through out.. its the traitors like you people who have let it be ruled by muslims and christians for last 1000 years. You are igniting communal tension and biasing a judicial inquiry and we can sue you for the same.

Have you ever written about the Jamia Milia Islamia Vice Chancellor , who openly supported his terrorist students ?Being proud of one’s religion doesnt make us communal like you !

We are proud hindus who are fighting against the injustice being meted out to hindus. But we also have friends from muslim & christian communities. If 83% of the population’s faith is the basis of a party and you call it communal party

but when the congress favors only Muslims & Christians for their votes & even supports their terrorist activities, that doesn’t become communal for you !

And now, anybody and everybody who ever interacted with the malegaon blasts accused are being blamed for sponsoring “hindu terror” !.This is absolutely Prosposterous. When the entire area of the delhi came in support of the muslim terrorists like Afzal Guru, no one ever dared to accuse them of anything! In fact all those in support of him should have been booked for treason.

The ordinary Hindu who invariably believes that it is his responsibility to coexist with the minority community. By and large the minority community too realises this fact. Nothing else can explain maintenance of law and order across the country consisting of over six lakh villages with a mere hundred thousand police stations.

But the crucial question is, whether our politicians realise the continuous damage they have inflicted on the unity and integrity of the nation by their recklessness ?  Do they realise the consequences of their actions ?

The media is playing hands in glove with the govt in maligning the hindus and you have proved to be irresponsible puppets rather than the responsible watch dogs of the society.

I expected you to condemn  this bias that has been meted out by our government on the majority community.

A newspaper like your’s which was always held in great esteem has fallen tragically to the level of other publicity-hungry, over-aggressively selling national dailies.

You sold your soul and lost your integrity by publishing this article. What a shame.

The Truth will Triumph

Indians are being today systematically prepared for psychological
enslavement, conceptual capture and are being subtly brain-washed. Hindus are being lulled by denationalisation of their psyche, while Muslims and Christians are being subject to relentless propaganda that they are different and are citizens of India as would be a
shareholder in a company run for profit.

As hindus, we have always been proud of our country, heritage, culture – which is all-accommodating. We have been ruled by others for 1000 yrs, yet we live in peace in with people of all communities/religion.

But what is getting alarming, is the fact that the hindus are being targeted by the negative forces, who are instigating communal tension and creating a propaganda to deface the peace-loving hindu religion.

In 1947, The Indian state formally adopted a peculiar nihilist concept of secularism, which concept anyway was never properly defined or debated in any forum. For example, the concept left vague what an Indian’s connection was with the nation’s Hindu past and legacy.

In the name of secularism, it was taboo for a public servant even to break a coconut or light a oil lamp to inaugurate an official function on the ground that religious symbols must not invade public life. Such orthodoxy was promoted by Jawarharlal Nehru and his Leftist advisers. But then at the same time government took over supervision of temples, legislated on Hindu personal laws, and regulated religious festivals, but kept aloof from the Muslim and the Christian religious affairs.

Thus secularism as a principle was foisted on the Hindus without making them understand why they had to abide by such legislation but not Muslims and Christians.

Electoral politics further confounded the issues arising out of secularism, and hence the Indian society became gradually and increasingly fragmented in outlook and of confused perspective. Hindu
society became divided by caste that became increasingly mutually antagonistic.

In the strongest terms, we want to protest the anti-hindu policies of the govt and the appaling media bias against hindus. Even the most popular media have acted irresponsibly – reporting without verifying facts and giving just one-sided views.

People’s Govt or Anti Hindu Govt?

INDIAN AMERICAN INTELLECTUALS FORUM

India is a predominantly Hindu nation.  83% of the Indian population is Hindu.  But it is a matter of great regret that India is the only country in the world where the Hindu majority population is being ruled by the other 17% minority communities.

Sonia Maino Gandhi, the President of the ruling Congress Party is a practicing Catholic Christian.  Her son Rahul Gandhi who is being groomed as the next Prime Minister of India is also a Christian.  Sonia’s daughter Priyanka Vadera and her husband are also Christians.  India’a Defense Minister is A. K. Anthony, a Christian.

Sonia’s closest advisors are:  Margaret Alva (resigned yesterday), Oscar Fernandes, Ambika Soni, all Christians (yes, despite Ambika’s Hindu sounding name, she is a Christian).  India’s Vice President is Mohammad Hamid Ansari.  Ahmed Patel, Gulam Nabi Azad and Salman Khurshid – the core members of Sonia’s think tank – are all Muslims.

Dr. Shakeel Ahmad is Minister of State in Home Ministry, a very sensitive post.  One more fundamentalist Islamist E. Ahmed, President of the Indian Union Muslim League is the Union Minister for External Affairs.  Mr. Abdul Rahman Antulay is the Minority Affairs Minister and Mr. Shafi Qureshi is the Chairman of National Commission on Minorities.  In addition, Sonia’s handpick Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy is also a Christian (again, to deceive the gullible Hindu public, he maintains a Hindu sounding name).

Prof. Valson Thampu, a Christian theologian, an academic and author, Chairman, NCERT Curriculum Review Committee, is a known Hindu baiter.  Mr. John Dayal, Chairman of Indian Catholic Union, notorious for his hate mongering proclivity, is playing a very disastrous role in National Integration Council.  Anti-Hindu UPA government uses the services of Mr. John Dayal and Mr. Kanchan Ilaya, another Hindu hater, to lobby with the U.N. and U.S. Congress, to drive a wedge in Hindu society and weaken it.

From the above, it is absolutely clear that India is actually being ruled either by the Moslems or by Christians.  The situation for Hindus in India, in short, could be described as abysmally apocalyptic.

While most Hindus are busy in their daily chores like earning a living, doing yoga, making money, celebrating festivals, enjoying their lives, building temples, our adversaries have hatched very sinister plans to enslave us politically and then obliterate Hindu Dharma from the Indian soil.  As a matter of fact, the Hindus are under a multi-pronged seize.

Muslim population in the world is approximately 1.3 billion.  They have more than 54 countries.  It is a paradox that Hindus with approximately one billion adherents in the world do not have even one country where they could live without any fear of being terrorized!

We must rectify this dichotomy at the earliest.

Because of our internal squabbles, in the medieval period, Afghans and Moguls used us to fight for them and finally they subjugated India.  Now, because of our disunity, myopic vision, apathy, selfishness, greed, and ego-centric attitude, the Islamists, Christians and Communists are vying with one another to control Hindus politically.

The next Parliamentary elections are round the corner.  If Hindus really want to jettison the anti-Hindu forces (such as Mulayam Singh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Ramvilas Paswan, the deadly combination of Leftists-cum-Islamists), who have entrenched themselves in the corridors of power and reduced Hindus to second class citizens in their own country, Hindus have to shed their squeamishness, and make a Machiavellian move to end this sordid chapter of servitude and vulnerability.

Media Terror !

Unaccountability of the media and the encouragement from the rulers make a deadly combination.. A mountain made out of a mole hill – goes the adage. But ‘our’ media is a step ahead.. they are making a mount everest out of nothing! And add to this, their own open failures of previous such biased anti-hindu reporting.. has anyone every questioned them on this ?

In an yet another attempt to malign Hinduism, the government is targeting Hindu swamis once again with arrest of Swami Amritanand . We all have seen what a futile attempt  it was in 2004 to taint Hinduism with the arrest of the Shankaracharya and how much the saint was disrespected by the media by calling him Godman and what not (read, “God, goons and lust for money” by Times of India (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/923547.cms and http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/921981.cms) . And finally, what came out of the entire ordeal? nothing against the Saint !. Not only is the case getting weaker and weaker but even the courts were surprised at the way the Holy man was treated by the government.

There are two things happening here. One is the attitude of the government and second is the role played by the media. Its important to distinguish between the two.

Lets look at the way government is handling the Malegaon blasts and how it is handling the multiple blasts in Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Hyderabad and Bangalore. How many times has a muslim clergy been suspcted or questioned regarding any of the blasts ? Isnt it very appalling ? Even though there is incriminating evidence against Muslims ? (whatever happened to the death sentence of Mohammad Afzal who attacked the parliament, was his Imam or mentor ever questioned or was he ever a suspect ?) Why such bias against the Hindus ? Now there are stong voices in the UPA government to not only lift the ban on SIMI but outcast Bajrang Dal !.. What has ‘secularism’ in India come to ?

Do we all know what happened to the blasts in Varanasi in 2006 ? “The Trail dries up” .. Really! this is not a joke, (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1455173.cms) . Did the trail really dry up ? or is this a cover up ?

Haven’t the Hindus had enough of this ? Isn’t it time that we put a stop to this nonsense that’s going around ? Don’t we have the responsibility as citizens of a democratic nation to hold the government accountable for its partial behavior ?

And now the role of the the media, particularly Times of India, CNN-Ibn and NDTV for the absolute disrespect they have Hinduism. Saffron-terror, terror-guru and hindu-terror, is this what they come up with in their headlines ? Whatever happened to headline news like ‘Christian aggression’, ‘christian terror’ when Swami Lakshmanand saraswati got killed in his ashram in kandhamal by christian goons ?

Why such bias towards one religion ?

This article is not about supporting violence. The Indian and the international audience should be made aware of the ground reality. We all have a responsibility towards doing this.

This is a call for all like minded people to come together in peaceful protests against the divisive forces.

Who’s is it anyways ?

The “Times of India” has always maintained its share of popularity, though it may not command the respect which equals the popularity. The reason is pretty evident in the article listed below. Irresponsible, Igniting communal tension, biased – are not the adjectives that is normally applied to a national daily, leave alone the ‘most widely circulated newspaper’.

We want to know:

On whose orders are these ridiculous articles written? To whom do we acknowledge for providing us with such deep insights ? Why are such drastic steps being taken ?

Dear All,

We want to bring an article published in Friday’s Times of India newspaper to your notice.

The article can be accessed via this link: http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Repository/ml.asp?Ref=VE9JQkcvMjAwOC8wOS8xMiNBcjAxMjAx&Mode=HTML&Locale=english-skin-custom

This article is an increasing evidence of the media’s bias while reporting communal violence and demeaning Hinduism. Such articles need to be protested in the strongest possible terms. The crimes against Hindus are overlooked in the name of ‘secularism’, and the violence committed on minorities by a handful get such widespread media attention.

The protest to this article is not an illogical outburst of emotion but a fact based expression of complete discrimination and bias towards the Hindus by TOI and media in general. Being the biggest nation-wide newspaper, the TOI has a great responsibilty of representing all the sections of the community and maintain peace and harmony rather than provoking communal disharmony through such articles.

Consider a few points raised here in this article:

1. The newspaper points out to the attacks on Christian minorities in Kandhamal, Orissa, but Has anyone heard about Swami Lakshmanand Saraswati who was murdered in his own ashram in Orissa by a Christian Mob in the middle of the night, right in Kandhamal ?. Why wasn’t that mentioned?

2. Another point, the article raises about the woes of Christians in Karnataka. How many of us are aware of the outright attack on the Lingayat Community by the Baptist mission, happening in Karnataka for over 10 years ?

3. Talking about Bengal, How many people in the world are more aware of the Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity compared to Sri Ramakrishna Mission’s service activities, which has been going on for more than 100 years, reaching out the neediest people worldwide, without making a point to publicize itself or bring in the communal angle ?

4. About the chattisgarh incident mentioned, how many of us know about the Christian missionaries in Chattisgarh who were arrested for bribing poor Hindus for conversion ? And it was the same Dharma Sena who tipped off the police and caught the missionaries red-handed. Why hasnt this come out to the public ?

While there is a worldwide outburst of violence and anger when a particular communities faith is disrespected, How many of us voiced our displeasure when a Russian Archbishop called Bhagwan Sri Krishna, a Satan ?

Media article are repeatedly inclining to a single sided view of reporting how crimes against Christians are being perpetrated by Hindus, but never the other side of the story.

Very cleverly, Christians are being portrayed as innocent victims who do not provoke, do not mean any harm to anyone, but involved in service activities, but Hindu organizations are being shown are aggressors and criminals (forget about the service aspect of the Hindus)

The youth should be made aware of this media bias and we want to be proactive in eliminating this discrimination. and the mail sent to:

While the government debates the existence of Sri Ram, provides discounts for Haj Yatra, while 40 hectares of land for Amarnath in our own country caused such a backlash, Isnt it time to wake up and take charge of protecting our own faith and values ?

Protest against Irresponsible Reporting of NY Times

A popular daily “New York Times” carried an irresponsible, provocative article a few weeks back. There was no basis on which they reported and it was an absurd article in which they themselves accept that conversions happen big time in India. They also state that the recent violence has been happening ever since the evangelists have arrived on scene.

We unequivocally protest such media bias, where they present one-sided, that too wrong facts.. and accept their own fault as being the cause for the whole unrest!

Dear Editor,

This is in response to the article ”

Hindu Threat to Christians: Convert or Flee” by Ms Somini Sengupta ( http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/13/world/asia/13india.html?pagewanted=2 ).

It was shocking to read such a biased article in your newspaper. Being such a widely circulated newspaper, we expect a certain amount of responsibility on your part, towards all sections of people and their cultures, before publishing such articles. This article is an increasing evidence of the media’s bias while reporting communal violence and demeaning Hinduism.

The article is a one-sided report without considering the viewpoints of the other side. We would like to clarify a few well-known facts before going in-depth into the points made in your article :

1. Hinduism does NOT allow conversion, leave alone promoting it. It is one of the most tolerating religions of the world. In fact, there are no rituals to facilitate conversion in Hinduism!

2. The east has always seen peaceful co-existence of various religions, unlike the west, where there has always been a conflict.
Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism, Shintoism, Zoroastrianism have always been peace-loving without making any effort to convert anybody from anything to their religions.

3. The article points out to the attacks on Christian minorities in Kandhamal, Orissa, but which article in the media reported about the murder of Swami Lakshmanand Saraswati in his own ashram in Orissa by a Christian Mob in the middle of the night, right in Kandhamal, when it happened ?

4. Your article mentions that the said Swamiji was converting people to Hindusim for the last 40 years, but does not site any evidence for that claim. In fact Swamiji was preserving the local culture, traditions and hertiage of the kandha tribes from evangelicals (we all are well aware of how native cultures were wiped off by Christian crusaders in Latin America !). And even if we assume he was converting (which in itself is a paradox because there is no conversion in Hinduism), its not a crime according to the Indian Constitution.

Hindu Organisations like RamKrishna Ashram, Chinmaya Mission, Arya Samaj, Art Of Living Foundation, have been working tirelessly since the last century towards the upliftment of the poor and needy in urban and rural areas – without being biased towards the faith/religion of the people. But in the hospitals run by Missionaries in Orissa, people are forced or blackmailed to pray to Jesus and convert to Christianity to receive any medical attention. Why didnt Ms. Somini Sengupta and the NYTimes cover this side of the story ? Isnt this a brutal crime and exploitation worth a mention ?

5. Christianity has been in India since the visit by St. Thomas in the first century AD, but the communal violence started only in recent yrs, on the arrival of christian evangelists.

6. The article mentions, “Over the past several decades, the Panas for the most part became Christian, as Roman Catholic and Baptist missionaries arrived here more than 60 years ago, followed more recently by Pentecostals, who have proselytized more aggressively.” The author herself is making a claim of how ‘aggressive’ and ‘proselytizing’ the evangelicals have been !! Aggression and proselytization has never been a part of the Hindu way of life. Also there is no evidence of violence among the tribes themselves before the evangelicals arrived.

Such media articles are  repeatedly inclining to a single sided view of reporting how crimes against Christians are being perpetrated by Hindus, but never the other side of the story. Very cleverly, Christians are being portrayed as innocent victims of communal violence and service oriented  but Hindu organizations are being shown are aggressors and criminals and the immense social service rendered by them, being completely ignored.

We would like to express our immense displeasure and unhappiness on your publishing this article. Its very unfortunate that the NYTimes has chosen to go down this path.  We will resort to a non-violent protest of this article and will do everything in our effort in bringing public awareness to the bias you are endorsing to.
